Dimitris G. Maroulakis was born and grew up in Athens, Greece, 43 years ago, where he lives to date. He completed his studies in shipping and worked in many field-related companies. He is now an in-house shipbroker in a shore-based large tanker and dry cargo management company.
He is a passionate freediver and underwater photographer. His main passion is the breath-hold diving in all disciplines (recreational, exploring and competitive). The element of water and the human aquatic ability intrigue him and on this basis he makes the best possible effort to capture special moments in this field and bring them to public. Apnea photography is a merger of both photography and freediving skills and, for this reason, perfect coordination during breath-hold diving is required.
The common element in photography and breath-hold activity is the purposeful pausing of action while pressing the shutter button and the hold of respiration before a dive. The word “PAUSE” (PAIISE) from the ancient Greek “παύσις” illustrates both elements and for this reason it has been selected to accompany his creations.
